Post-Cancer Pregnancy

I’ve recently received a couple of calls in regards to pregnancy after cancer treatment. And I thought I would share some information that would be beneficial.

It is important to ensure that you consider trying to have a baby when you are very certain that cancer won’t recur. The general timeline is 6 months post cancer treatment for men, and 2-3 years for women. The recommended timelines vary by the condition of an individual so please consult with your doctor before doing so.

Some individuals believe once you receive cancer treatment, you can’t conceive a baby. While it may lower your chance to conceive a baby after chemotherapy, due to a decrease in ovarian function for women and a decrease in sperm motility, not all cancer treatment prevents you from conceiving a baby. It really depends on type of cancer, patient’s age, treatment methods, and how your body functioned before the cancer treatments.

Breast cancer patients who are receiving hormone therapy should stop taking hormones 3-6 months before trying to conceive a baby. Again, this is an estimated timeline, so please consult with your doctor if you are looking to do so.
