I have seen a fair amount of individuals who suffered from neck pain due to an automobile accident and thought I would share some helpful information.
Since the joint in the neck allows the head to move back and forth, when people get into a rear-end car accidents, they usually get what is called “whiplash” even with a seatbelt on. Whiplash is a neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth or right-and-left neck movement that damages the surrounding tissues such as neck ligaments, muscles, and discs.
When we typically speak about the neck disc issue, we are referring to degenerative issues that have been going on for years or more than a decade. It didn’t happen just overnight. If your neck’s surrounding tissues have been impacted from other events such as sports injury or other traumas (e.g. a fall), an auto accident will likely damage the neck muscles and ligaments with strong force, aggravating degenerative issues such as bone spurs or herniated discs.
Examples of possible symptoms are:
- Stiffness around the neck
- Pain on the shoulder or upper back
- Numbness/tingling sensation to arm or fingers
- Reduced range of movement
- Headaches that are constant or intermittent
