Several individuals who came to see me for menstrual cramps were able to leave their acupuncture session almost pain-less and I thought I would explain briefly how the acupuncture helps.
Menstrual cramps are pain in the lower back and lower abdomen before, during, or just after menstruation period. The pain usually disappears when the menstruation begins but depending on its severity, it can last throughout the period. Menstrual cramps can occur due to one of several causes. Uterine fibroid, endometriosis, or adenomyosis are some causes. However, the most common cause is “prostaglandins” that trigger uterine muscle contractions. When the blood doesn’t circulate well in the uterus, your uterine muscle would need to contract more to discharge more menstrual blood. For this to occur, higher levels of prostaglandins would need to be secreted from the body.
By normalizing blood flow as it ought to, acupuncture can regulate your cycle and help lighten the blood flow. In terms of the best time to receive acupuncture treatment, I would recommend a day or two before the beginning of the cycle to reduce the intensity of the pain or the duration of menstrual cramps.
