Here is a research study which shows that acupuncture, herbal medicine and manual therapy can be effective in reducing persistent or recurring pain and in improving functional impairment for those who are still having the low-back pain after surgery (i.e. failed back surgery syndrome, aka FBSS). The study sample includes those individuals who had a surgery due to lumbar disc herniation or stenosis.
