Gout: Swelling in the Joints

Gout is a common form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints. It is often at the base of the big toe but it can occur in any joints.

When your body produces too much uric acid or your kidney excretes too little uric acid, uric acid can build up, creating needlelike urate crystals in a joint or tissue that can cause pain, swelling and inflammation. When gout progresses, you may have difficulty moving joints normally. If untreated, it can lead to joint damage.

Acupuncture, along with herbal medicine and dietary change, can help decrease the uric acid in your body. Feel free to give us a call to learn more.
