Several modern research show that acupuncture helps with fertility by inducing ovulation and increasing blood flow in the pelvic region; as a result, acupuncture is considered one of the most effective modalities for treating infertility. It may not be as effective as clomiphene (ovulatory stimulant) for inducing ovulation, but acupuncture is known to have almost no side effects.
In the U.S., ovulatory dysfunction is considered one of the most common causes of the female infertility. Other causes of female infertility may include uterine or cervical abnormalities, fallopian tube damages or blockage, cancer and its treatment, etc. The complex sequence of hormonal events is required in order to trigger ovulation. This means that if any problems occur in the pathway of hormonal events, it can lead to the failure of ovulation.
Common clinical manifestations of ovulatory dysfunction are irregular menstruation or no menstruation. Too much or too little discharge during menstruation, as well as discharge occurring when not on your period, can be other manifestations. If you have severe menstrual pain or if you happen to measure your basal body temperature and find that the length of time between ovulation and the monthly period is shorter than usual, there is a possibility you might have ovulatory disorder.
In my next article, I will explain how tracking your basal body temperature can be used for fertility.
